Then catch a wave at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Calif. This annual surfing competition is the largest in the world. Hop on a board with professional surfer Malia Manuel, who in 2008 became the youngest US Open of Surfing champion – at just 14.

Finally, Detroit isn’t a place you think of as being lush and green. But cast a kayak in the Great Lakes Waterway and paddle to secluded Peche Island. This paradise in the Detroit River is less than 10 miles from Motor City, but feels like another world.
