It (also known as It: Chapter One)[5][6] is a 2017 American supernatural horror film[7] directed by Andy Muschietti, based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The screenplay is by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman.[8][9] The film tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process. The novel was previously adapted into a 1990 miniseries.[10][11][12]

The film stars Jaeden Lieberher and Bill Skarsgård as Bill Denbrough and Pennywise the Dancing Clown, respectively, with Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, Nicholas Hamilton, and Jackson Robert Scott in supporting roles.[13][8] Principal photography began in the Riverdale neighborhood of Toronto on June 27, 2016, and ended on September 21, 2016.[14][15] Other Ontario locations included Port Hope and Oshawa.[16][17][18]

It premiered in Los Angeles on September 5, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 8, 2017.[19][20] Upon release, the film set numerous box office records and grossed $700 million worldwide.[21] Unadjusted for inflation, it is the highest-grossing horror film and the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time (after Deadpool and The Matrix Reloaded).[22][23] It received positive reviews, with critics praising the performances, direction, cinematography and musical score, with many calling it one of the best Stephen King adaptations.[24]

A sequel, It: Chapter Two, is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2019.[25]
It is the title character of Stephen King's 1986 horror novel It. The character is a malevolent alien entity which preys upon the children of Derry, Maine, roughly every 27 years, using a variety of powers that include the ability to shapeshift, manipulate, and go unnoticed by adults. During the course of the story, it primarily appears in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

King stated in a 2013 interview that he came up with the idea for Pennywise after asking himself what scared children "more than anything else in the world". He felt that the answer was clowns.[1] King thought of a troll like the one in the children's tale "Three Billy Goats Gruff",[2] who inhabited a sewer system.[2]

The character was portrayed in its Pennywise form by Tim Curry in the 1990 television adaptation[3] and in the 2017 film adaptation by Bill Skarsgård, who will reprise the role in It: Chapter Two, which is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2019.[4]

It (sometimes as IT most of the time) is an ancient alien/eldritch monster and the title character and main antagonist of the 1986 novel the same name (and subsequent television and film adaptations). It is a shapeshifting creature that is billions of years old. Although It lived on planet Earth for years, it originated in a void/dimension outside the regions of space known as the Macroverse. Due to its shape-changing abilities, the true identity of the creature is never established. It also seems to have no real name or identifiable species, thus why the characters refer to the creature as "It".

It can morph into any other person, animal, or object (including combinations thereof). This ability is useful for A) appearing as the target's loved ones or friends to lure them into a trap or B) appearing as the target's fear. However, It most commonly manifests as a circus performer named "Pennywise the Dancing Clown".

It's primary goal is to feed on humans, It was capable of killing every kind of human, but mostly preferred to prey on children than adults, as they are easier to manipulate and scare. According to the creature, frightened flesh tastes better.
