Kurdistan is often described as a nation without a state. Though it may be split over four modern-day nations (Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran), it is in the former that there is the closest thing to a nation state: Iraqi Kurdistan is for all intents and purposes an independent country for travellers and visitors, with its own devolved government, administration and military.

Iraqi Kurdistan - known locally as Başûrê Kurdistanê or Southern Kurdistan - is divided culturally between its two biggest cities: Erbil, the historic capital, and Sulaymaniyah, the high-society capital! Both cities - and beyond - offer a great insight into the past, present and future of the Kurds in the region; skyscrapers mingle with ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites and the old chaxanays mingle with the flashy new restaurants and coffeeshops. A fascinating place!
